Glad that’s done....Platte River ½ Marathon Race Report

I’m going to keep this short, none of you want to hear me whine, and I could (and have) believe me.  The race and packet pick up is well organized and smooth, and although this is the 2nd time I’ve run this race  I’ve yet to participate in any of the finish line festivities. The only positive about my race is that I got to see some friends.
Jill and I (I was as thrilled to be there as I look)

Kathleen , me, Meg
As you know I went into this race very under trained. Now while some people might have the fitness base to carry them through it...I obviously do not. It hurt. Yes other races hurt, but not like this. Miles 1-5 were not too bad, I have no idea what my times were as I walked out of the house without my Garmin, miles 5-10 were tolerable. Some running some walking, by miles 11-13 I was pretty darn miserable and most of my time was spent walking. The wind had picked up and at times felt like you were being pushed backwards. The temps dropped and there were a few sprinkles here and there. Everything hurt,  I felt like I was dragging my left leg along for the ride, it was kind of a strange sensation.  The last mile was ridiculous. There is a bridge over the highway, while it’s not a huge hill it is a hill, really the only of the course, and the bridge seemed to go on forever and ever,  thank god for the fence on the side of the bridge because the wind gusts were so strong they were literally blowing us over. In the end I achieved a personal worst of 3:02.

The only other thing I have to say is that I will never go into a race of this length feeling so completely under trained.

Now it is time to get down to business....when I stop hurting.... :)

Julie, I hate a crappy race! Sorry to hear that this one sucked so badly. It's just motivation for others. Keep your chin up! It sounded like the wind was a huge factor too. That always makes things worse. Enjoy some rest and recovery!

Yes, wind sucks!! You are entitled to whine. I'm sorry it was a bad experience, but that which does not kill us.....

Yes, that wind really picked up in the end! It seems so great for the first hour or so. But you saw it through and that is the most important thing!!!

I'm SO proud of you for getting out there! 13.1 miles!! I know your life has been crazy and training as been minimal - so you just put a big deposit in the "mental toughness" bank. Great job all around - esp. considering that annoying wind!

Well done on finishing though!!

You finished, that is all that matters, 13.1 is tough, its not easy at all, it hurts. COngrats on the race!!

Congrats on finishing! Just think, you put laps around those who refuse to get off the couch!
Who cares what the time was....don't be so tough on yourself, smile and be proud every time you look at that finisher medal-it's been earned!

That bridge is brutal, as are any headwinds on that course. I was prepared for the course when I ran it last year (my third time), but once the headwinds kicked in my speed slowed considerably. Congrats on finishing anyhow!

Sorry, I've been so MIA from blogland and missed this post earlier.

If there's one thing that I do like about really crappy races (like the one I just did, too) is that they definitely make us a little more determined to get back the conditioning back we so miss. At least, for a little while until the novelty of hard work wears off - haha. You did it though, and sometimes that's just good enough. You got a really cool medal and shirt out of the deal too :). You really are so incredibly tough!!

Holy ugly double chin-ness in that picture of me. Bleh.

Thanks for the bday wishes! Will email you later today. Off to go run before the rain comes!

I'm inspired by the fact that you went to the starting line! Well done for finishing. Impressive considering how the last few months have been treating you. Hope you're not hurting and have been able to get back into training.
