If not this what?

So over the weekend I attended the Roller Derby championships. It was the first time I’d been although I’ve been wanting to go for over a year. My mom, aunt and I went on the spur of the moment and yes we might have been a wee bit out of place but it was fun. The crowd was different than I expected. It was mostly female and I’m not sure I’ve seen that many tattoos, big tattoos in one place in a long time. It took awhile to start to catch on to what was going on and a girl sitting in front of us filled us in on some of the rules and game play. Loved, loved, loved the girls names like Bloody Mary and Physco Babble. It was however not near as aggressive as I thought it would be but there was some pushing and shoving. I gave some thought to what it would be like to try it, always looking for the next challenge you know. I’m pretty sure my old body couldn’t take the falling and skidding across the floor not to mention the fact that I’m not that good on skates. There was a time in my life when I thought of myself as a little bit wild and rebellious, which I think, would fit right in with the roller girl image, and hey I have a couple of tattoos that I could make bigger. Anyway it did get me to thinking that if I had to give up running and triathlons what would I want to do in its place. What hobby would I pick up? Is there another sport I would like to give a try? Softball? Tennis? I just don't know.

What about you?

If not this what?

I think it would be fun to go to Roller Derby! I don't think it would be fun to be in Roller Derby, but to watch it..heck yeah. I don't know what my hobby would be. I recently stumbled upon The Brown Eyed Baker's website and saw about 1000 desserts I wanted to make. I think that would be a dangerous hobby for me though! I would have to have a strict bake and give policy!

I went to my first derby bout at the First Bank Center last year-- the Bad Apples vs. the Green Berets! For the life of me, I couldn't figure out the rules or anything that was going on....but I hear you on the tattoos. They were everywhere!

I've heard about roller derby. I've even met some derby girls, but I've never seen it done. It sounds pretty crazy!

Ha, Michael and I went to a Roller Derby (match?) a few years ago. It was just as you described, but I couldn't tell if it was fake like pro wrestling or real. They seemed to be trying, but who knows. It was pretty entertaining though.

Being an ex hockey player, I think I would rock the Roller Derby scene.

I would love to get back into hockey again

very cool! I've never been and have no clue where to even find RD around here.
My fallback sport would be my first love: ice skating. I have a growing affection for the bike too.

I would love to try roller derby, but I'd be too afraid of getting injured. Truthfully, I've gotten more cautious about trying new things because I don't want an injury to take me out of tri-ing.

Having said that, if not triathlons, then I think it would be soccer. I loved playing it when I was younger, and was debating getting back into it a couple years ago. Then I got into triathlons instead, and there just isn't time for soccer too. (Plus, I think I'd be afraid of getting injured in soccer...)

Think mine would have to be volleyball...not that I've played in years, but still!

Curious about your tattoos - what ink do you have? What was it inspired by? I've got a small lizard on my ankle - have had it for about 13 years and it still makes me happy.

If I had to give up running and triathlons (I shudder to even write that!) I would try yoga. Or boxing.

My neighbor's daughter, who is this tiny little thing of maybe 90 lbs (she's 30), does Roller Derby. Cracks me up!

I tried cycling when I couldn't run. Epic fail! But....if I invested a little more time in it, I think I'd like it more.

I used to go to Roller Derby back in the '70s, man those ladies were rough! I loved every minute of it!!
If I was better on skates I would totally do that...

I'm definitely going to bag me all 54 14ers someday. Mountain climbing (within reason--no Everest for me) is my alternate sport of choice!

I'd go watch RD, though. How wild!

I've definitely contemplated roller derby but I think cyclo cross is up next on my list.
