Race Report: Tri for the Cure year 3!

I have to say from year to year I forget just how crazy and inspiring the Tri for the Cure is! To see that many women out there is just.... WOW! Incredible. Packet pick up was great, very smooth, they always say to expect lines but in the 3 years I've been going (and I got there around 10) I've never had to wait at all. Straight in to get your chip, chip check, pick up swim cap and over to get your shirt, (soon to be another favorite I can tell) and just that quick your done. Of course then you have to do a little shopping. Picked up a Bondi band this year, but I'm not sure I'll ever have the nerve to wear it...me thinks it looks a little funny on me. But who knows, seeing as how I spend a large part of my life in spandex (and not the same type of spandex I wore in the 80's) its obvious I'm not to worried about how I look. :)
Race day dawns early.....way to early...especially according to my 2 teenage boys that I decided would attend this event with me. I rarely make them go to any of my races as I know it's not that much fun for them, however occasionally I decide they need to see just how I'm spending the weekends they are at there dad's. As well as why I spend so much time training. And to tell the truth there was not a complaint out of them all morning. My oldest son took all the photos and they did a great job being able to see me start and end each of the three disciplines. No easy task when you have all those people out there. The only time I saw them was when I started the run. So any way back to the race report, my alarm went off at about 4:10, this after being awake for awhile at 2, not good, I crawled out of bed dressed and finished gathering stuff up. I made a PB&J sandwich to eat but could only managed about 3/4 of it on the drive out to Cherry Creek. Left the house by shortly after 5 for the 30ish minute drive out to the lake. Got to transition and unpacked, funny how some people think they are going to have several feet instead of several inches. Got body marked and it wasn't long before I got my wetsuit on and headed down to get in line.

This pic came from the Tri for the Cure Website, Transition is huge!!!!

See the arrow pointing me out, click picture to make it bigger.

I was wave 8 which went a little before 7:30 I think. Saw the elites and survivor waves take off and some of them exiting the swim, man they are fast! My swim felt good, I just put my head down and started swimming. Got kicked a few times but nothing major. Sighting was easy, between all the people, and I believe they have more buoys, I had no problems at all. It was a great swim. I didn't really push it, just went nice and steady. I can't believe how easy the swim seems to be for me this year. I feel much more confident and I'm sure the wetsuit doesn't hurt!

Not the best swim exit pics, but I've had much much worse!

T1 well as you would imagine when you have 3000 people competing transition areas are huge! See above photo. So it's quite a run up the boat dock to your bike and then this year there was a bit of a change to allow people to leave as soon as they were done competing, so it was quite a walk to the bike exit also. I felt like I was moving pretty good, could have gone faster but considering the distances, and in bare feet and bike shoes, I'm not to unhappy with my time.

Once on the bike I felt I was passing many people, a few passed me but I felt pretty good. It's a little difficult to pass sometimes when there are so many people too. Drafting is often not something you can even control. And I do find that I often end up behind someone thinking I can't get passed them and spend to much time just cruising along before I realize that I'm not working as hard as I should be. The course is pretty rough, not to bad for 11 miles but won't be much fun next weekend for 22 miles! It was good to be able to ride parts of the course and be a little more prepared for next weekend. I took one Gu on the bike with water and finished feeling like I had worked hard but left enough to keep going.

Bike time 39:49 17.1mph 757 out of 2704
T2 5:04

Nothing much in T2 quick change of shoes, bathroom stop and out to run.

I was fooling around with the Garmin as I left T2 couldn't get it to work right. Although I set it for multi sport I hadn't used it this year and forgot how it worked, then I couldn't get it to do anything. While I was fooling around almost missed seeing my boys as they yelled at me and snapped a pic.

You can tell I was happy to see them! Funny story about the lady you can just barley see. I had told the boys I would wear orange so that I would stand out from all the pink, black and white, well this lady seemed to look just like me and ended up in several of our pics! By the way I guess in the sunlight orange can look alot like pink anyway!

Finally I got the darn Garmin to start and started on my 2 minute run/1 minute walk. Kept that up through the first 2 1/2ish miles or so and felt pretty good. It was hot but could have been much worse. The last part of the run is all downhill so I just ran it in and felt so happy at the finish line. I believe I had a big smile and it's the first time I've ever heard them announce my name and I cheered as I crossed, maybe a good finisher photo? Probably not. :) I carried a bottle of coconut water/water mix. I've found that I really like the taste of it better then Gatorade and it seems to be working with keeping me hydrated and the electrolytes good. I also took a couple of Hammer Endurolytes during the race.

Coming up to the finish line!

Obviously my weakest point!
Running time 36:37 pace 11:48 rank 1558 out of 2704

Total time 1:44:53

And that my friends is 10 minutes faster then last years time of 1:54! I'm very pleased with that. I'm sure the almost 20 lbs I've lost over the last 15 weeks plays a part in that as well as moving from the hybrid bike to the road bike.

Happy very happy about today's performance.

I just have to say that Downing Events does a fantastic job organizing that many women! Everything seems to go very smoothly. The thing I just love is no matter how old you are, what size you are or how athletic you are, Tri for the Cure gives every female a chance to become a triathlete!

Now I don't know if it was the race, the lack of sleep, or the training I've been doing over the last few weeks, but after returning home and showering, I just died. I was so tired. I layed down and took an hour and 1/2 nap and I can't tell you how long it's been since I took a nap, even a short one. It felt fantastic!

Sportin' the Tri for the Cure

Now back to our regular schedule.....

Sweaty Betty-----Nice----------->

I have a long weekend! After the concert I knew I wasn't going to want to work Thursday so I took the day off...and who wants to go back to work on Friday, so I took another day! After only about 5 hours sleep, (since I didn't get to bed until about 1 a.m. and can't ever sleep in!) I went out to do my planned 6 mile run.....as my previous post was titled I felt like I was flying...not that I was going that fast but I sure felt light on my feet for some reason. Even after a few Sweaty Betty's last night, very good stuff by the way! The first 3 miles were most enjoyable...after that it got a little more difficult and the last mile not so much fun, but all in all a very good run. I spent some time thinking about what I have coming up in the next month or so. Tri for the Cure is next weekend already! And then there is something every weekend after that for the month of August....well that's if I sign up for the Creek Streak Olympic, which I'm planning on. So I have 3 tri's and I'm thinking of a 10k....does that sound like to much for one month? Yes kind of. I will need to be careful not to overdo it and get hurt but I don't think that will be a problem. I will use Tri for the Cure and the 10k as training. So any way part the reason I started thinking about all of this is that I was sportin' all the Tri for the Cure stuff today.Which by the way I love! This is the shirt from 2008 race. My first tri, not only do I love it because of that, but I love the fit. And or course I rarely run without my fav Tri for the Cure cap!

Sweaty Julie---not so nice------ :)

Exciting news!

I've been given the chance to do the Tri For the Cure !!!! I had decided early in the season that although I really wanted to do it, I would have to miss it in order to try some new races. So because I still wanted to participate I signed up as a volunteer swim buddy. Recently I was asked if I would blog about the race in exchange for a registration. YOU BET! I'm very excited for the opportunity to share!

Tri for the Cure was my very first tri two years ago. (2008 race report 2009 race report )I'll never forget my friend calling me and saying
K - "let's do a tri"
Me - "a WHAT!?!?!?"
K - "a triathlon"
Me - "are you crazy?! I don't swim, I don't have a bike and I barley run"
K- "so, let's do it"
Jokingly I mentioned it to another a friend and before I knew it her and her sister in law were in too. And I mentioned it on a diet website that I hung out at and a friend from Colorado Springs decided to give it a try also. In all that would be 5 of us. It lead to truly one of the best summers I've had in a long time if not ever. We spent many hours riding and training. In the end only 2 of us would end up actually doing it as one never got as far as signing up and the other two after doing all the training ended up having to drop for some personal reasons. (They did however train and finish the Tri for the Cure last year!)

Me, Jen, Shawna 2009

This is such an incredible race. It is simply amazing to see that many women of all shapes, sizes, ages and abilities doing one incredible race. Because it's a sprint -Swim 750M (1/2 Mile)Bike 18.3K (11.4 Miles) Run 5K (3.1 Miles) it is totally doable for everyone. And they do everything the can to make it possible from training to swim buddies if your nervous about the swim. Believe me if I could do it I'm pretty sure anyone can! The last 2 years that I've done it it has sold out (although I don't think it is sold out yet!) I think there were about 3000 women! Crazy! All out there to support one cause. The whole day is pretty emotional from the beginning when you watch the survivors take off in a wave to the end as you watch women who never thought that they could do something like this, crossing the finish line. The feeling is one you won't believe. The power. There is nothing we women can't do!

I'm really excited to race Tri for the Cure again this year. (I am of course hoping to beat my time from last year. ) Although this means I can't be a swim buddy I do hope to be able to volunteer in some other capacity. So any of you Colorado women out there looking for a sprint to do on August 1st? There are several of you I'm still trying to meet up with!

Tri for the Cure 2009

TRI FOR THE CURE 2009
SPRINT TRIATHLON
SWIM 750 meters (1/2 mile)
BIKE 18.3k (11.4 miles)
RUN 5k (3.1 miles)
You might want to make sure your comfy....this is kind of long! And I want to tell you guys all thanks again for all of your support. You are the best!

Done! All went well I'm not sure of my exact times as I don't think I did my watch right. I didn't want to use my garmin, so just used my waterproof watch/lap counter. I think it was around 1:54. Which would be about a 3 minute improvement over last years, not much but I'll take it! Woke up at 3:45 although my alarm wasn't set to go off until 4:15. Had a little oatmeal with yogurt mixed in a cup or 2 of coffee and off I went. I was pretty nervous this morning on my way there, but once I got into transition things were all good.

Me in transition before the race. Behind me you can see the run start and the dam road

Just a general shot of the transition area, one small part of it. You can see it on both sides of the road.

Transition is just amazing! I forgot how big it is! When you are talking 3000 bikes and women it is just incredible! It's hard to tell from these pics but trust me there are a lot! Which reminds me...I biked my rack in the wrong place...:) 6 instead of 9 ...maybe I'm a little dyslexic or something. But when I realized it I decided not to move it at that point. Our rack was not really all that crowded so I don't think it really mattered. So on to the swim, met a really nice woman in the corral while waiting to swim. We chatted for quite a bit and that made the time go really fast, before I knew it was our turn and in the water we went! Water felt pretty good, a little initial shock but once you were in it was fine. It was about start time that I realized I was in about the middle of the group instead of the back were I usually line up but to late to do anything at that point. The horn sounds and we're off! I had a really hard time finding my rhythm. I think I was at the first turn before things started feeling better. I was feeling pretty good though, behind me were a bunch of blue caps (my wave) and I was starting to catch the slowest from the wave in front of me. Although about this time the fastest from the wave behind us were also passing. I did run into quite a few people this time but no major problems. Before I know it I'm getting out of the water, I think my time for the swim was around 19 minutes, that would be an improvement over last years 22 minutes. I made an effort to run up the boat ramp thru transition ( I really wanted to speed up my transitions times which were crazy long last year, however as I said transition is crazy huge!) Felt like I did pretty good got to my bike shoes on, shirt on take a drink and head out, although I did get stuck behind a girl who was just kind of moseying along, I couldn't pass her because it was to narrow. The bike starts off on a small uphill which was not a problem, but it always seems like the first 5 miles of a bike ride is all about warm up. This ride is pretty flat although I think it's a bit uphill and we were going in to a headwind. There is one pretty rough hill just passed the 1/2 way point. Passed a lot of people and got passed by plenty too. It's amazing because you see every kind of bike you can imagine out there. Even saw one with a basket on front! You also see all size and age women it really is incredible not to mention inspiring to see some of them out there! So anyway made it up the hill and from there it was easier, slightly down hill an flat. At this point I saw one lady walking her bike and it looked like her handle bars had fallen way forward or something..yikes not sure what that was all about! Getting off the bike again could tell that I have not done my brick work like I should legs were a little wobbly, but I have a long way to the other side of transition to get it together. Had to stop for a pit stop in the bathroom, and as one girl put it those porta potties rocked...I mean literally rocked! The were not very stable at all and some of them just king of threw you around inside. LOL! Business taken care of and it was off to run....well walk....I did a lot of walking I'm afraid to say. It's not only my bricks that didn't get worked on this last month. :( The start of the run, about 3/4 of the first mile is all up hill. You have to run up from the boat ramp to the dam road. and then out about a mileish or so on the dam before you turn around and head back. And I got to tell you it is so hot up there on top. It's all black top surrounded by rocks (you know the dam) and there was no breeze at all. I was getting the chills on and off (something that happened last year too, think I may need to get more electrolytes) on the plus side the end of the race is downhill. One thing that I don't much like is you can't see the finish line until you are on it. You run down the hill and then have to round a corner and then it's right after that. It would be nice to be able to see the finish line before you hit it. I believe I finished with a smile on my face and could not resist raising my arms and doing a little cheer. I got my finisher metal grabbed a water and headed over to the CWW tent to see who was there. Met up with a girl I've become somewhat friendly with ( she had passed me on the hill in the run) We grabbed a beer and a bagel and chatted with the coach a little. Yoli is such a great coach, she is so full of enthusiasm. At that point I headed back over to transition. I wanted to try and see my friend come in from the bike (they had started about an hour later then me) My timing was almost perfect I had only been standing there a few minutes when the headed in off the bike. I snapped some pics of them and saw them off on the run. Then I headed up to a portion of the run where I could cheer for them as the came in (after getting another beer of course) Got to cheer for a bunch of people which is fun, it really makes a difference to have people cheering. Snapped a few more pics of my friends as they came down the hill and went to the finish line to say hello to their families. I'm really proud of these two for doing it.

My friends and I after they finished. Way to girls!

They were the two that were going to do it last year and then both had to drop out the week before. Neither has been able to train much, and one of them had a baby about 3-4 months ago, and was on complete bed rest for the last 3 months of her pregnancy...way to go girls! Wow that's quite a long race report, and I'm sure that I left something out. I have to say though that this is such a well run race, I can't believe the job they do considering the amount of people and all the logistics of a triathlon.

Not sure how well you can see this but this is a line of people leaving, now there are still alot of people racing too and that line stays that way for a long time. In fact this was when my friends were running and it was not much smaller when I left an hour later.

Feeling pretty good all in all, iced the knees a little and I can feel some stiffness, but all in all just a walk in the park...along with a bike ride and a swim.
